A Collection of Random Tools
These are a collection of some of the more fleshed out generators and random generators created by Fish Davidson. Although it skews heavily toward traditional pulp fantasy, other genres are slowing being added. Most of the results are open-ended enough that they can be transposed into other genres with relatively little effort.
Settlement Generator (PDF) - Throw handfuls of polyhedral dice to create fantasy settlements that are grounded in real-world concerns like geography, climate, available resources, economic systems, and systems of government.
Modest House Generator (PDF) - Another generator that involves rolling seven polyhedral dice at once, this one creates detailed houses with encounter hooks for the middle class of the pulp fantasy world.
Spaceship History Generator (PDF) - Originally created as a resource to help create well-used spacecraft for Orbital Blues games, it easily translates into any sci-fi setting with working-class people traveling in grimy spaceships that are always about to fall apart. Yes, it also involves throwing all the polyhedral dice at once, even though the Orbital Blues system doesn't use all those dice.
Fantasy Character Generator - Create fantasy characters with backstories, quirks, and life events that easily translate into modern Dungeons & Dragons contexts, but are inspired by approaches from a wide variety of systems. Just add stats and gear to make them adventure-ready!
Partially-Cursed Item Generator - For those times when an item needs to have a minor quirk to add some flavor to the narrative. Each item has several potential triggers and effects. There's almost always something fun to be had with this one!
Pedigree/Lineage Generator - A javascript-based generator that creates family trees for fictional characters and draws it to the browser's canvas so it can be saved as an image. It includes support for family trees for species that produce asexually from a single parent or require more than two parents to produce offspring.
Oath of Allegiance Generator - Creates oaths of allegiance for fictional nations that are based on fragments of text that are found in the oaths of allegiance of existing nations.
Book Title Generator - Although the output of this generator is really hit-or-miss, every batch of books always seems to spark inspiration that rockets off in unexpected directions.
